In a climate such as today’s, it is nearly impossible for an artist to be apolitical, or to “stay out of politics”. As such, I created Trump: The Real Annoying Orange in March of 2019.
This piece was inspired by the “Annoying Orange” webseries, a relic of mid 2000s YouTube that remains ongoing to this day. In the series, an orange with a face superimposed onto it annoys other fruits and foods (hence the name), with episodes filled with bad puns and general nuisance. With general nuisance being a common theme of Donald Trump’s inarticulate speeches and Twitter rambles, the two were a match made in heaven. It’s easy to imagine a version of the Annoying Orange series featuring Trump yelling at other political characters like Celery Clinton, Joe Beanden, Burdock Obama, and Bernie Salads.
This image started out by masking out a famous image of Trump, then adding it on a layer over the orange. Then, using, the blend-if slider, I was able to tone down the brighter pixels of Trump’s face to transparent, creating a seamless blend of the source images.
