The Band
Breaking Even is a Pop-Punk band from Staten Island, NY. While known as a mainstay of the local music scene, the band went quiet for a few years. In 2018, however, the band returned, and has since kept chugging along, stronger than ever! A scene mainstay once again, Breaking Even is comprised of members LJ Goity, James Bucchieri, Eric Bucchieri, Justin Alpert, and Andrew Ruggiero. Take my word that you shouldn’t sleep on this band as they continue to grow. I consider the members of Breaking Even to be good friends of mine, and it was an absolute pleasure creating these various graphics for them.
The Logo Designs
The first graphic I did for the band was a logo, expanding upon their “TV head guy” mascot. First used on their past EP A Lesson in Adolescence, the dazed look of the TV head guy carries with it the confusion and uncertainty of life, reflecting themes of the band’s music. I cleaned up his design up within Illustrator and brought him into the modern era. Having a recognizable logo or mascot character is an instrumental part of music marketing, and having the work done by a music minded graphic designer helps to ensure that the mascot or logo communicates the tone of the artist’s music.
Other work I’ve done for Breaking Even includes variations on their logo for merchandise designs, with multiple fonts and variations on the size and placement of the TV head guy mascot, as well as a promotional graphic the band has used on their social media platforms, stickers, and promotional cards.
The Album Cover Designs
Another important design for bands is the album cover. With cover art often being a listener’s first impression of an album or song, it is important that an album artwork design communicate the vibe of the album. This is something I worked with Breaking Even on, translating the reflective feeling of their Sadder but Wiser EP into the design you see here. After the success of this design, the band and I worked together again on the art for their single “For What It’s Worth”. The darker imagery conveys the questioning present in the track’s lyrics. All in all, these album cover designs were made to reinforce the meanings of the music they’re attached to.
